Technology has always been a huge fascination of mine. I remember when I was younger and the Disney Channel Original Movie Smarthouse came out (throwback!) and I wanted my house to be that way. Now in 2017 it’s possible for our homes to be automated (though I still wish my floor would magically suck up all of my items and put them away for me!). With the click of a button, or even the wireless signal that your phone sends your router “I’m home!”, an entire routine can be set up for you without having to lift a finger. Here are some of my favorite techie gifts this year.
Away Luggage: I just recently purchased this for myself, and I can already tell it’s going to be an incredible travel companion of mine for years to come. I’ve used it twice in the last month for weekend trips, but can’t wait to use it on week or longer adventures. The compression compartment, laundry bag, and external USB charger make this bag so organized and useful. It’s also extremely lightweight and stylish looking.
Alexa Dot: While some people feel like Alexa is a glorified kitchen timer, I personally use her for a lot more things. She tells me the weather for that day, plays me music on a sleep timer at night, tells me jokes, and is connected to all of my smart things. She can turn on my living room lamp by me asking as soon as I come in the door, and she can turn up or down the temperature on my smart thermostat with a single request.
Smart Outlet: If you have an Alexa, a simple way to get her to turn on your lights for you is with a single smart outlet. They’re extremely easy to install and update your current outlet, and we have one for our living room lamp and even one outside for our string lights on the deck. We’re looking to add a few more to our bedroom and kitchen as well.
Wake Up Light: Not to sound melodramtic but isn’t waking up THE WORST? Especially in the winter when it’s pitch black outside until 7:30am, I have such a rough time getting up. And a blaring alarm scaring me awake doesn’t make it any easier. I’ve had the wake up light for a few years now and cannot picture a better way to wake up. It slowly turns on a light over a period of time (you adjust the time and the brightness), and then has an alarm play. You can set a typical alarm (think the blaring horn noise), the radio, or some nature or spa sounds. We have birds playing as it’s peaceful but still effective.
Google Chromecast: While we’ve been debating purchasing an Apple TV for years, my boyfriend and I think Chromecast works just as well. We usually stream Netflix or YouTube, so it’s all we really need. And for $35 (most of the time you can find it on sale!) you really can’t beat the price. I’ve had mine since it launched in 2012 and cannot say enough good things about it.
DJI Drone: I was lucky enough to receive a drone for my birthday and I am so in love with it. If the person you’re looking to give a gift to loves taking cool arial photos and videos, this is a no-brainer. The spark is adorable, fits in your hand, and is extremely compact while still having a beautiful composition. I personally have the Mavic Pro if you’re looking to step it up even further.
